How To Overcome The Fear Of Success – Tips
It’s hard to overcome The Fear of failure and the fear of unknown. Read this post to learn how you can overcome the fear if you want to succeed.
We people are always afraid of something. It’s a normal protecting mechanism in our mind to keep us safe. But more than often our mind is overprotecting and tries to protect us from things that are not dangerous at all. I can’t tell you exactly what is scary and what is not because everyone has different fears.
One thing can be scary for a Joe but for Sally it could be a piece of cake, so I will try to keep this post as generic as possible.
Where The Fear Comes From
All the fears usually come from the past. It doesn’t really matter if it was our early childhood or recent situation. For example, I am afraid of sharks. The fear is that big that for a long time I didn’t even want to look at sharks photos. The funniest part is that I’ve never seen a shark in real life, never touched it or swim near it. This fear came from watching too many times the “Jaws” movie with my father when I was little. The scenes from the movie had a huge impact on my mind and to be clear, it’s not that I am afraid of every small or middle shark, I am freaking out when I even think about the Great White Shark. The same one which was in the movie “Jaws”.
As I mentioned before, I’ve never seen Great White Shark in real life but I am truly scared of even thinking about it.
I believe you also had things you saw or experienced in your past that made you a fearful person. The first step to overcoming the fear is to try to remind what happened in your past that made you be afraid of something.
The Fear Of Failure
Entrepreneurs want to grow their business, a family person wants to succeed in keeping strong relationships with the spouse and kind. A person who collects coins as a hobby wants to succeed by having unique coins in the collection. No matter whether it is a business or personal life people want to succeed.
The only way to succeed is to step up and take massive action, but you don’t do it because of the fear.
You need to realize that if you don’t attempt to do the thing you want to do it’s already a failure without having a chance of winning.
If you want to overcome the fear of failure here is what you can do:
1. Get pen and paper (NOT TABLET!)
2. Draw a vertical line in the middle of the paper.
3. On the left write all the best scenarios which come from the completed task.
4. On the right, all the worst scenarios which come from failing the task.
5. After you write everything down, compare the 2 columns.
6. One more time review the right column and you will see that the things you wrote aren’t as scary as it was when you were thinking about them for the first time.
This is a mind trick. That will make you feel less stressed, less feared and you will feel better when you will try to attempt to do the task. Do it each time when you start to have a fear of failure.
The Fear Of Unknown
Trying to go somewhere unknown is scary. Meeting new people can be scary as well, but let me ask you few questions.
Did you go to a primary school? Do you remember your first date? Do you have a driving license or any other license?
I hope you could answer “YES” to at least one of these questions. The point of me asking you these is to make you realize that in your past you attempt to do something new and you are still alive. You are totally ok now and your life is totally changed now because of that.
The difference between a childhood and adulthood is that there is no one to force us to overcome our fears. When you were 7 years old you couldn’t just go to school. Even if you were scared and you cried so much, your parents probably put you in elementary school anyway. When you were a child and you had to go to the doctor or dentist you couldn’t resist because your parents took you there anyway.
This is how one by one you overcome some fears as a child. Overcoming fears as an adult, whether it’s about business or personal life is same. The only thing is that you need to force yourself because parents are not around anymore.
Small exercise: Think about 1 thing that you were freaking out about in your past but you did it anyway and you succeed. It can be even a small thing like the first kiss. I want you to focus on this wonderful feeling of overcoming the fear. If you can remember that situation and your heart is beating faster when you think about it, you are in the right place. Now, do this exercise every day. It doesn’t have to take a long time. 5 minutes every day is enough to train your mind. At some point, the warm feeling of desire will be stronger than the fear.
I hope you like this post. As I am currently fighting with small and bigger fears from the past, I want you to do the same. Let me know what fears you have, maybe we can find a fast way for you to overcome those fears.
